A prosperous society for all – Iceland Conference on opportunities for children and young people in sports

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Children and the Ministry of Health in Iceland hosted, at the beginning of April, a conference under the title `A prosperous society for all – opportunities for children and young people in sports`.

The conference sought to identify the challenges when it comes to equal opportunities for all children in sports. Representatives of beneficiaries, sport clubs, sport federations, state and municipal service systems have to work together to elaborate proposals for an action plan for full participation of people with disabilities based of their own abilities.

At the event, Special Olympics Iceland, expertise partner in the project `Inclusion through sports for children with intellectual disabilities`, moderated the panel titled `Where are the opportunities – what can be done to increase active participation`. The most important conclusion of the panel underline how important it is to work together towards the future goal of inclusion where all children are welcome in sports. Another important conclusion of the panel was that it is important to give appropriate support to coaches, as a good coach is the key to successful inclusion of children with disabilities in sports.
